New York CNN —Consumers may be fed up with high prices at the store, but they’re still willing to splurge on travel. Other key players in the travel industry have reported a similar trend this earnings season. Americans, especially lower-income consumers, have pulled back spending at retailers as goods inflation outpaces wage growth. They’ve even become frugal with some experience-based spending like dining out, opting instead to eat at home. “We saw a healthy but more normalized market environment for travel globally,” CEO Peter Kern told analysts on May 2.

A New York appeals judge on Tuesday knocked down yet another long-shot bid by Donald Trump to delay his criminal hush money trial, this time by seeking a pause while he challenges his court-imposed gag order. The swift rejection marked Trump's second failed attempt in less than 24 hours to postpone the Manhattan Supreme Court trial, which is set to begin jury selection in six days. The gag order bars Trump from speaking about likely witnesses in the case, and from making certain statements about other related figures including lawyers, court staff and their respective family members. Presiding Judge Juan Merchan last week expanded the gag order to stop Trump from targeting the family members of the judge and the D.A. Those witnesses are publicly attacking Trump and he is unable to respond, Bove told the judge, according to NBC.

A New York appeals court judge on Tuesday rejected Donald J. Trump’s latest attempt to delay his criminal case in Manhattan, another blow to the former president’s increasingly desperate attempts to prevent the trial from starting next week. The appeals court judge, Cynthia S. Kern, denied Mr. Trump’s bid to pause the case while he pursues legal action against the judge presiding over the trial. Mr. Trump brought the action against the trial judge, Juan M. Merchan, in hopes that the appeals court would both delay the criminal case and throw out a gag order that Justice Merchan imposed on him. The order prevents Mr. Trump from attacking witnesses, prosecutors and the judge’s family — as he so often does. Mr. Trump’s invective “causes predictable terrifying consequences,” said Steven Wu, a lawyer for the district attorney’s office, adding that there was “no basis” to delay the trial while the court scrutinizes the gag order.

CNN —An appeals court judge has denied former President Donald Trump’s request to delay the start of his New York hush money trial so he can challenge the gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan. New York Associate Justice Cynthia Kern denied the application for an interim stay just minutes after hearing arguments on the matter Tuesday. A full appeals court panel will still consider Trump’s petition, though it will not delay the start of the trial. This story is breaking and will be updated.

Active pump jacks increase pressure to draw oil toward the surface at the South Belridge Oil Field on Feb. 26, 2022, in unincorporated Kern County, California. Oil prices rose in early Asian trading after hopes diminished that negotiations between Israel and Hamas would lead to a ceasefire in Gaza and ease tension in the Middle East. Brent crude futures rose 40 cents to $90.78 a barrel by 0032 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 35 cents to $86.78. The market is continuing to weigh the risk of a disruption to oil supply.

Trump hoped to delay his first criminal trial by arguing that he needs time to fight his gag order. Trump is continuing to appeal his gag, which bars statements about witnesses, jurors, and others. U.S. oil prices have climbed to their highest level since late October, as the rally in the key commodity becomes something equity investors cannot afford to look past. In other words, the latest ISM Manufacturing report serves to support the view that the U.S. economy is doing much better than many believed it would just a few months ago. Oil trading at its highest levels since late October has implications for stock market investors. The Fed's preferred measure of inflation may be the core personal consumption expenditures price index, which removes the impact of food and energy prices, but consumers still pay for energy. The rise in energy prices — particularly at the gas pump — can result in a decrease of discretionary dollars left for other purchases.

Republicans are expected to hold the seat easily, and the party’s fragile majority in the chamber is not at stake. The district, which cuts through the Central Valley farm belt including parts of Bakersfield and Fresno, is the most strongly Republican seat in heavily Democratic California. Oil prices up on strong U.S. demand, Fed signals in focus
  + stars: | 2024-03-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices rose on Wednesday on expectations of strong global demand, including in the world's top consumer the United States, and as even somewhat sticky U.S. inflation did not dent expectations the Fed might start cutting rates soon. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, stuck to its forecast of a strong oil demand growth globally of 2.25 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024 and by 1.85 million bpd in 2025 and raised its economic growth forecast for this year. In another indication of healthy demand, U.S. crude oil inventories and fuel inventories fell last week, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures. Lower rates support oil demand. Oil prices were under pressure in the previous session after the U.S. Energy Information Administration raised domestic oil output forecast but declines were limited on expectations that OPEC+ output cuts will still slow global oil growth and on the recent wave of drone attacks on Russia, including refineries.

Working oil pumpjacks on the outskirts of Maricopa in Kern County, California, on Sept. 21, 2023. Oil prices rose in early Asian trading, but price moves were limited as the market waited for monthly reports from oil agencies. "Crude oil traded in a tight range as traders await demand estimates from the monthly reports by three key oil agencies," analysts from ANZ said in a note. "While we believe the estimates will be largely unchanged, any upside surprise will ease demand concerns," ANZ said, referring to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the International Energy Agency, and the Energy Information Administration. Prices had been mostly unchanged on Monday as oil supply concerns tied to ongoing fighting in the Middle East eased.

Oil prices ticked lower on Monday, extending losses from last week as traders wait for a new round of inflation data. Most investors are expecting the Fed to cut rates in June. Lower rates typically stimulate economic growth, which fuels crude demand. OPEC and the IEA will also release their monthly oil market reports on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Crude oil futures rose more than 1% on Friday as signs point to a tightening market ahead of an OPEC+ decision on production cuts. U.S. crude and the global benchmark booked a second consecutive monthly gain as front month contracts trade at a premium to later months, which is typically a sign of a tightening oil market. OPEC+ is considering rolling over its production cuts through the second quarter and possibly the end of the year, three sources in the organization told Reuters this week. The cartel and its allies are expected to make a decision on the cuts in the first week of March, sources told Reuters.

Third-generation oilman walks past a working pumpjack at his oilfield in Taft, Kern County, California on Sept. 21, 2023. Oil prices ticked up in early Asian trading on Monday, extending gains for the third straight day, as shipping disruptions spurred supply worries. Brent crude futures rose 16 cents, or 0.2%, to $82.69 a barrel by 0106 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures (WTI) climbed 15 cents, or 0.2%, to $77.73 a barrel. Iran-aligned Houthis have continued their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, and while the Israel-Hamas war has not significantly constrained oil supply, it has increased freight rates and shipping time, leaving barrels on the water for longer. In public, Israel and Hamas continued to take positions far apart on a possible truce, while blaming each other for delays.

Expedia is cutting 1,500 jobs as travel demand slows

New York CNN —Expedia, the online travel agency, is eliminating about 1,500 employees as part of an “organizational and technological transformation.”The cuts, which amount to nearly 9% of its 17,100-strong global workforce, come amid slowing travel demand following a post-pandemic boom and a broader shakeup at the company, including a new CEO. Expedia (EXPE) said in a regulatory filing that the cuts will result in an $80 million to $100 million charge to its bottom line because of severance and compensation benefits costs. Over time, Expedia has acquired several online traveling booking platforms including Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz, Hotwire.com and Travelocity. An Expedia spokesperson said that the changes “will result in the elimination of some roles” that “allows the company to invest in core strategic areas for growth.”Expedia had previously announced that CEO Peter Kern was departing his role. Ariane Gorin, who is president of Expedia for Business unit, will take over the position in May when Kern’s contract ends.

A California prison inmate locked up on a gang-related murder conviction led a scheme that defrauded the U.S. government out of more than $550 million in Covid-era federal tax credits, prosecutors said. Five other people were charged with Thomas in the alleged drug trafficking scheme. The employee retention credits became a refundable federal tax credit for employers during the Covid-19 pandemic to encourage businesses to retain workers. "But that apparently was not enough: he also conspired to pursue over half a billion dollars in federal tax credits that were meant to help struggling businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic," Talbert said. DEA agents intercepted those calls and also intercepted text messages showing Thomas communicating about the tax fraud scheme, prosecutors said.

Oil ticks down in Asian trade despite rising Middle East tensions

California produces 311,000 barrels of crude oil every day, around 2.4 percent of all US production, making it the seventh largest producing state in the union. Oil prices edged off in early Asian trading on Wednesday on continued bearish fundamentals, following gains in the previous session amid an escalating conflict in the Middle East. The March Brent crude futures , which expires today, fell 37 cents to $82.50 a barrel by 0146 GMT. But ANZ analysts said in a note that "a strong military response from the U.S." to the drone attack "could still trigger a strong reaction from the market."
